Picture this: You have just finished chatting with a friend you haven’t been able to spend time with for a little while.  It is brought up in the conversation that you’d like to plan a day or night to go out, kick back, and try to catch up.  There was even some talk about inviting a few more of your friends to tag along.  It sounded great, and you were excited for it. You were really just tangled up in the moment.

Until the conversation ended, and the phones were put down, you hadn’t really thought about HOW you were going to actually spend the night.  In a way, you seem to expect the perfect plans to just fall into your lap. Continue reading

Happy summer friends! I hope everyone was able to make it through that frosty and harsh winter!  Now that the weather is really starting to heat up, I’m sure all of you, like me, are ready to kick back, relax, and pick up a frosty pint to cool off.  After getting in the spirit over the weekend with Independence Day, I couldn’t be more excited to announce that we will be celebrating American beers this month down at the Yankee Doodle Tap Room!  And what better way to kick things off then to reflect on why beer is such a part of America’s pastime. OktoberfestWell folks I will be the first to come out of denial that summer is wrapping up.  Goodbye shorts, beach days and bikinis.  However, there are some great distractions to keep us warm during the unforgiving winter.  Things like the great American game of football, the warm fireplace at the Yankee Doodle Tap Room, and of course (to go with the fire) Oktoberfest!  Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival celebrating beer; held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.  Running from late September to the first weekend in October, it is one of the most famous events in Germany and is the world’s largest fair with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year.  To the locals, it is not called Oktoberfest, but “die Wiesn”, after the colloquial name of the fairgrounds themselves.  The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810.  Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the original Munich event.  Traditional recipes for the Oktoberfest beer is a Märze. Märzenbier is full-bodied, rich, toasty, and typically dark copper in color with a medium to high alcohol content. Continue reading

Princeton Summer Happenings – Fun Activities for All to Enjoy!

If you’re already thinking about hightailing it into the fall and getting the kids back in school; I need you to take a step back, take a deep breath and listen: The summer is not even close to being over! Princeton has a lot of fun and exciting happenings to take advantage of while we still have plenty long, sun filled days to soak up.

A fun activity to do with the kiddies is Lunchtime Music on the Green. This event is hosted by Palmer Square and takes place right on the green! Between noon and 2 p.m., you can enjoy live jazz music while having a leisurely lunch from one of the many Princeton eateries. The last event will take place on Thursday, August 18th featuring Sophiztajazz.

Palmer Square is also hosting the Annual Summer Sidewalk Sale – this year taking place on Friday, August 18th through Sunday, August 21st. This event will feature live music and great deals from some of your favorite local Palmer Square shops.

The Princeton Tour Company is also in full swing for the summer! With these tours, you can see where Albert Einstein lived, famous architecture in Princeton and see which of your favorite places is haunted with ghosts! You are able to choose from group and private tours to accommodate your group!

Every Thursday you can have a pleasurable outdoor lunch, listen to live music and enjoy fresh local produce and the Princeton Farmer’s Market located on Witherspoon Street in front of the Witherspoon Grill and the Princeton Public Library. Some vendors include: Tassot Apiaries for local honey, beeswax candles and soaps; The Witherspoon Bread Company showcasing and selling freshly baked breads and pastries and Tico’s Juice Bar where you can get freshly squeezed vegetable and fruit juices.

If you are looking for some indoor fun, the Morven Museum & Gardens is presenting The Stars and Stripes: Fabric of the American Spirit which is running now through October 31st. This exhibit follows the American Flag from its 1777 creation into the twentieth century. You can follow the history of each flag while visually experiencing each edition.

The Yankee Doodle Tap Room is also hosting weekly Acoustic Thursday, every Thursday night on the Yankee Doodle Tap Room patio in August! The Tap Room will be featuring CJ Barna on August 11th & August 25th. August 4th & August 18th will feature Greg Nease and Suzannah Sabin.  CJ Barna will also be performing live acoustic sets on August 3rd, August 17th and August 31st.

Kicking back and relaxing through the end of the summer is important for your personal Zen and mental health. Before you start back to school shopping, creating lunch schedules and getting the car pools set take advantage of the vitamin D that is shining and waiting for you! Keep your kids entertained and treat yourself to some yummy summer cocktails. Be sure to check back next month for some more great tips!

We are very excited to announce that the Yankee Doodle Tap Room will soon be installing four additional taps to our bar; for a total of 16 draft beers! The most drafts beers on tap in Princeton.

The additional taps will allow us to offer a variety of draft beers brewed both locally and around the world. A beer that we are particularly eager to offer is the Chimay Tripel (commonly referred to as Chimay White because of the color of the label). Chimay is a world renowned brewery of authentic Trappist ales.

An authentic Trappist beer is a beer brewed by or under control of Trappist monks and is offered in various styles. There are only seven Trappist monasteries that are authorized to label their beers with the Authentic Trappist Product logo that indicates a strict compliance to various rules edicted by International Trappist Association.

Chimay Tripel (White) Belgian- Style Tripel Strength (ABV): 8.0% ABV

The Chimay Brewery is a Belgian brewery founded inside Scourmont Abbey, in the Belgian municipality of Chimay in 1862. The brewery produces three widely distributed ales, Chimay Rouge (Red), Chimay Bleue (Blue), and Chimay Tripel (White). Of the three beers, the Tripel is the only Chimay made available on draft. The Chimay Red and Blue are readily available in conditioned bottles. The products of Chimay Brewery are sold only for financial support of the monastery and good causes. The brewery business pays rent for use of the property within the abbey, which is used to support the monastic community. The majority of the profit from the sale of the beer is distributed to charities and for community development around the region.

Behind The Red Door: Post-Holiday Healthy Eating

Although losing weight and getting healthy may be a cliché of a New Year’s Resolution, the New Year is a great time to kick start a new diet plan. As an avid nutrition and exercise planner, I love when my friends and family get in the spirit of getting healthy when the New Year rolls around.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are a vital part of eating healthy.

Healthy eating can be boring and hard; and I am one to attest this. The staples of my diet consist of cottage cheese and lettuce: this doesn’t mean it has to be monotonous!

The Yankee Doodle Tap Room offers a variety of healthy and light choices for those who love to eat out and still remain healthy. Kick-starting your day with a healthy and hearty breakfast is the most important diet tip to remember. While most people forget about breakfast, I opt for the Tap Room’s Egg White Omelet: served with broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and feta cheese. Seasons Greetings! The holiday season is a time for sharing with family and loved ones and what better way to do that than with a flavorful seasonal brew.

The beer community is rich with offerings of Holiday/Winter Seasonal brews that are sure to delight. Winter Warmers are the beers of choice this time of the year and many breweries throughout the world have a tasty brew to offer. A winter warmer is an ale that is characterized by its big malt presence both in body and flavor. Their color can range from brownish reds to nearly pitch black. And these brews have pronounced alcohol warmth. There are variations on this style of brew, but the two most prominent versions are a traditional and a wassail.

The traditional English style ale is often referred to as an “Old Ale”, with no spices added. A perfect example and a personal favorite is Theakston Brewery’s Old Peculiar. A wassail which is popular among many U.S. microbreweries has added spices, such as, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Another personal favorite is Anderson Valley Brewery’s Winter Solstice Ale. What does the night before Thanksgiving mean to me?

Meeting up with friends I haven’t seen in a year, my stomach hurting from laughing, listening to great music, and last but certainly not least, having an ice cold adult beverage in hand. The night before Thanksgiving reminds me of a high school reunion. It’s that one night a year you look forward to seeing all your old friends and reminiscing about the good ol’ times. It’s that one night you’re okay with waiting in a line. It’s the one night no matter what type of music the band is playing for that night, it’s everyone’s favorite. It’s a night of never ending rounds, a constant flow of beer and laughter that could carry on into the morning. The beers never seemed so cold; the drinks have never tasted so superior and the conversations never get dull.

New Fall-Winter Menus at the Tap Room

As the seasons change and the brisk October air of autumn chills us all, I always start to think of the warm comfort foods that have satisfied my cravings over the years. I think back to my grandmother’s hearty chicken pot pie filled with earthly goodness, the succulent leg of lamb that has made my mother a culinary master in my eyes, and the classic steak that my father roasts to perfection. Executive Chef Matt Volpe of the Yankee Doodle Tap Room has embraced this comfort food theme with classic dishes and new dishes that are sure to excite.

Brie Lobster

Chef Volpe has created two new appetizers to our menu, the Brie Lobster and Chicken Pot Stickers. The Brie Lobster features soft brie cheese and lumps of lobster meat wrapped together in phyllo, then baked to a crisp golden brown and served with a portobello sherry sauce.

Chicken Pot Stickers

The delicious Chicken Pot Stickers have bits of chicken wrapped in an Oriental pastry, and then pan fried and served on a bed of sesame mustard sauce with pickled ginger and drizzled with soy sauce.
