Nassau Inn Hosts Holiday Toy Drive!

The holidays are upon us! Can you believe how fast this year has gone?

This season, those of us on the East Coast really have something to be thankful for – regardless of where we live or where we’re from, we were all affected by Hurricane Sandy.  The outpouring of support has been tremendous and many are grateful for the help especially coming into the holiday season.  Now we have to help the kids – they deserve a magical holiday!

In honor of the children who lost all of their belongings, the Nassau Inn is hosting a Holiday Toy Drive! From Black Friday through December 16th, the community is invited to drop off unwrapped toys (or gift cards) in Santa’s Toy Chest located in the Main Lobby of the Nassau Inn.

All toys will be hand delivered by the Nassau Inn staff to children living in the shore communities on December 17th.

Social Media Alert! You may take your picture as you drop off your gifts and upload them to our Facebook page (@TheNassauInn) or Tweet them (@NassauInn)!

We hope you’ll participate.  Every child should experience the magic of the holidays.

Hurricane Sandy – The Aftermath

On October 29th, 2012 Hurricane Sandy changed the lives of those living throughout New Jersey and New York like never before.  The freak weather phenomenon, or Frankenstorm as it was called, destroyed homes and businesses, left millions of people without power and resources – not to forget those who lost their lives, and left what was once the Jersey shore unrecognizable.

Now, here we are two weeks later.  The destruction still exists, although clean-up has begun.  People are slowly regaining power and trying to return to a semblance of normalcy as best they can.  The feelings of desperation and devastation are starting to ease and it’s all due to the tremendous outpouring of support and aid available.  People from around the world are donating to help those who’ve lost everything.  Electric companies from all over the US drove here to lend support – you may have seen them driving up and down the highways looking for their next location to restore.  It’s humbling to see communities pull together, government and celebrities assisting in the clean-up, and fundraising events to support the rebuild.  People are starting to have hope again.  Although they may not regain exactly what they once had, they will regain something bigger… a new lease on life.

One of the hardest parts for people to overcome is the loss of memories. Homes that people lived in, raised their families in, and built their lives in are under water.  Sites where many spent their childhoods are gone.  Restaurants where families enjoyed a meal no longer exist.  Businesses that people depend on are now closed.

A popular saying is ‘it takes a catastrophic event like this for people to realize what’s really important” and that’s pretty accurate.  Those who’ve experienced this hurricane will never forget it or the sacrifice of those who came to help.

The Princeton community was hit hard by Sandy, but in comparison to other areas, we were more fortunate.  To help those who’ve lost everything, the Princeton Business Community has united to host a Hurricane Sandy Relief Drive on November 20, 2012.  During that day, people are asked to shop and dine in participating business.  A portion of all sales will be donated to New Jersey coastline relief efforts as well as the American Red Cross.  Our Yankee Doodle Tap Room will be participating in the Drive and we hope you will too.  To see a list of all local area participating businesses, please click here.

Through darkness comes light – through tragedy comes awareness – through suffering comes comfort.   As time passes, New Jersey and New York will rebuild and we will regain our strength.  Our communities will thrive again, our shores will be restored, and we will create new memories.

How did Hurricane Sandy impact you?

What was the most important thing that came out of this experience for you?

The Magic of Halloween – A Holiday For All Ages!

Oh the magic of Halloween – the holiday most people can, and do, enjoy. Unlike some of the other holidays that lose their thrill as you grow up, this is one you can love at any age!

Although the origin of Halloween is quite grim, it has evolved into a day/evening of light-hearted fun.  As a child, you got to dress up in costume, trick-or-treat for candy (Oooh Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups!), carve pumpkins, and pretend to be someone you’re not (or wish you were) for a few hours.  Let’s be honest, hanging out in your costume and divvying up the candy loot after a long night of trick or treating was the best!

Then you grow up.  Halloween parties become all the rage among your circle of friends!  You still dress in costume and pretend to be someone you‘re not for one evening (sometimes for a prize).  Our choice of costumes may have evolved from princesses, pirates, or super heroes to, well, pirates, super heroes and… Ok, maybe our costumes haven’t evolved all that much, but there have been some pretty creative ones out there recently.

The point is, Halloween bridges the generational gap for children and adults alike.  It has become more family friendly and sensational!

Parents, are you excited to share the holiday with your kids?  If you’re looking for something fun to do, bring your children to the Yankee Doodle Tap Room on Halloween. Kids under 12 and in costume eat free!  Click here for more information.

With Halloween a few days away, how will you celebrate? Best response could win a prize!

You and Your Pet – Enjoy the Dog Days of Summer!

For anyone who owns a pet, you know how tough it is during the summer to find activities to do with your pet.  Either they aren’t allowed or it’s too hot.

Meet Sydney

Well, as the dog-mom of a 16 month old cockapoo named Sydney, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to leave him out of an activity that he would have loved.  So, after seeing him in his crate on one too many weekend days, I decided to hunt down some activities he could do with me where we’d both get to enjoy the ‘dog days of summer.’

If it’s one thing my dog loves to do, it’s run (Or steal people’s socks and run, whichever)! Being a runner myself, this works out pretty well!  On Sunday mornings, Syd and I head over to Kelly Drive in Philadelphia and hit the pavement.  With my trusty sidekick next to me, we run a few miles (in between people stopping me to tell me how cute he is, yes… I know) then stop at Dunkin Donuts – iced coffee for me, munchkins for him.  Win/Win!

Most dogs like water… they like to drink it, run through it, jump in it.  Syd’s the same way.  The one thing I couldn’t wait to do was let him run in the ocean, but as I walked him onto the Ocean City beach in June, I was informed that dogs aren’t permitted between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Thank you rent-a-guard – glad I just drove over an hour to get here and now have nothing to show for it.  There had to be a beach where Syd could go!  My trusty smart phone located one and off we went to Sunset Beach in Cape May where he had the best time!

Another one of Syd’s favorite past times is eating!  It doesn’t matter what it is, he’ll try it (his fondness for fresh produce is quite funny and lets not even talk about custard!).  So when we’re out and about, grabbing something to eat often happens.  Finding pet friendly dining establishments is tough.  Since I’m not a fast food eater, I have to prepare ahead.  I live near an extremely pet friendly town that’s peppered with outdoor seating restaurants that allow well behaved pets.  It’s usually a good sign that a place is pet friendly if you notice water bowls out for thirsty pups, but make sure to call ahead as the laws in each area are different!  You know the Nassau Inn is a pet friendly hotel, right?  Fact!

Since there are times when I do have to leave Syd behind, I found the next best thing for him is puppy daycare (dogs must be up to date on their vaccinations and must also have a bordetella shot)! He gets to play with other dogs and comes home thoroughly exhausted – BONUS!  Two places that provide excellent care and long hours are PetsMart and Camp Bowwow!

Now that you know a little bit about Syd and our misadventures, tell me, what kind of pet do you have?  How do you spend time with them?  Where are some of the pet friendly places you like to go?
