Bridget & Valerie’s
June 2017 Wedding

Bridget and Valerie met each other in 2009. At the time, gay marriage was not recognized federally, so even though they were in love, they never imagined that their marriage would be a possibility. Who would have thought that 8 years later, their wedding dreams would come true? On June 30th, 2017, Bridget and Valerie had their outdoor ceremony at the Nassau Inn, and it was everything they had wished for. Here is their #PrincetonLoveStory, as told by Bridget and Valerie! #MeantToBV

“Our wedding day at the Nassau Inn was a fairytale that came to life,” Bridget says. “We love Princeton for so many reasons. As big foodies, we enjoy trying out new restaurants and different types of food around town. We love how open and accepting everyone is in Princeton. We feel very comfortable being here, simply walking around and enjoying the atmosphere. We also love visiting historic spots and exploring interesting places to shop!”

“Bridget and I both love spending time in Princeton, whether it be having a nice romantic dinner or a few drinks at Yankee Doodle Tap Room, Triumph or Winberies,” says Valerie. We love shopping at the Farmhouse Store (now Homestead Princeton) and Kitchen Kapers for new kitchen gadgets, as we love spending time together cooking for our family and friends! We also enjoy grabbing a drink at Starbucks and ice cream at the Bent Spoon (Valerie’s favorite dessert). We love Princeton more and more each time we come back! The scenery and ambiance throughout the day is perfect for a nice relaxing day with the love of your life.”

“Our wedding day was truly a whirlwind of excitement. Bridget and the girls were off to the salon for hair and makeup, while I made sure all was well at the Nassau Inn. Melissa and Natasha were absolutely amazing and did everything they could possibly do to make our day perfect. They both kept us calm and extremely happy! We enjoyed the after party at our favorite Yankee Doodle Tap Room all night before heading to bed upstairs at the Nassau Inn. When we woke up in the morning, we had to pinch ourselves, because of all of dreams came true!”

“Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love. How on earth can you explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love? Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with that special girl for an hour and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.” – Albert Einstein

“Bridget and Valerie are beyond blessed to have each other! I am so grateful that I could be a part of their special day and bring their wedding dreams to life!”

Chen & Ning’s
Princeton Love Story 6.24.17

As the saying goes, “what’s meant to be will always find its way.” Ning & Chen, our featured Nassau Bride & Nassau Groom, show us the beauty of believing in the destiny of true love. Most importantly, they teach a valuable lesson that couples who are “meant to be” make continued efforts in love and gain strength through difficulties.

“Our story began when we were both attending the University of Hong Kong in 2008,” says our bride, Ning. “We knew each other through mutual friends, but the first time we really spoke was when Chen asked me to be his partner for the University’s Christmas party.  After the party, we were often together in the university’s library, as Chen became my personal math and statistics tutor.  As so often happens in romantic places like libraries, we gradually became closer over time.”

“After graduation in 2012, Chen pursued his PhD study at Princeton University,” she continues. “After that, we experienced a long distance relationship for five years, and it wasn’t always easy. But we always believed that there is no doubt that our destiny is one destiny, and our futures are in fact, one future.”

“I tried my best to visit Princeton at least twice a year, and all my favorite memories with Chen in those five years happened in Princeton,” says Ning. “We love to canoe in Carnegie Lake in Spring. We love to have gelato from the Bent Spoon in Summer. We love to hike near Princeton in autumn. And I love the winter in Princeton since it’s rare for it to snow in Hong Kong as it’s a subtropical country.”

Lake Carnegie Surprise Proposal: “Chen pretended he was still in London due to a late visa delivery. But he traveled back overnight and planned a secret proposal by Carnegie Lake on June 15. I couldn’t stop crying after his first sentence.”

“I decided to get married in Princeton when I first visited the campus,” says Ning. “I was impressed by its grandeur. I also wanted to get married at a place where both of us share beautiful memories.”

“Ning and Chen are hopeful, romantic, and inspirational sweethearts. I’m delighted to have worked with them, and anyone who meets Ning and Chen can see that there is truly a genuine love for each other,” says Melissa Dill, Catering Sales Manager.

Thank you for the beautiful photos, Resonance Vision!

Dana & Robert’s June 2017 Wedding

Dana and Robert got married here in June. This is the story of how our #NassauBride & #NassauGroom fell in love, as told by the bride!

“After we met through our mutual friend, we started dating on weekends because he lived in North Jersey and I lived in Central,” says Dana.  “We enjoyed the same things, really.  We both like animals, we enjoyed going on walks together, we enjoyed cooking and eating together, we enjoyed being foodies together and taking special trips to NYC to find and eat good food. We eventually moved in together and realized that even together all the time we still got along very well and our love continued to grow.  He eventually proposed to me one morning in April at Long Branch on the Boardwalk.  We were the only people there walking along the boardwalk because it was misty and kind of cool and the next thing I know he is down on one knee proposing.  It was very sweet and perfect.”

“What were our favorite parts about our wedding and the setting? I absolutely loved the fact that the Nassau Inn isn’t a wedding factory.  There is nothing worse to me than a giant cold impersonal reception hall.  I wanted a smaller venue and it was a huge bonus that it was smack in the middle of Princeton where there is plenty to look at, do, and eat.  It’s such a cute location for friends and family to come celebrate with us.  I loved the back patio.  I really wanted to get married there so I was happy we could book the bigger room with our smaller wedding and that the wedding held out so we could actually get married out there.  The setting made the ceremony that much more special.  I liked the proximity to the University as a back drop for pictures.  As you can see, our photographer made good use of the University for interesting picture settings. Oddly enough it never occurred to me that people off the street would watch our wedding outside, but something about an entire crowd of people we didn’t know stopping to watch our wedding was just amazing.  It made the whole thing feel really special above and beyond what I expected,” she said.

“Dana and Robert are beautiful together, and they are great people – so sweet, kind, and down to earth. I loved working with them!”

A Winter Wonderland Wedding

Wintertime is filled with festivities from seeing magical lights, ice skating, drinking hot cocoa, kissing under the mistletoe, and snuggling to keep warm by the fireplace. Winter is simply a romantic time of the year, a time when you can feel love in the air, and some say, the most magical time to get married.

“Brew me a cup for a winter’s night. For the wind howls loud, and the furies fight; Spice it with love and stir it with care, And I’ll toast your bright eyes, my sweetheart fair.”
– Minna Thomas Antrim, “A Book of Toasts” (1902)

If you’re wondering where to get started, we have created a seasonal timeline to help you plan a winter wonderland wedding!

Summer“Love, whether newly born, or aroused from a deathlike slumber, must always create sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance, this it overflows upon the outward world.”
Nathaniel Hawthorne

Let the bright sunshine of summer inspire you to reinforce your love with activities like going to the beach, dreaming together, and taking summer engagement photos. Summer is a special time of starting anew and turning wedding dreams into plans, so compile a list of priorities with venue booking at the top of your list.

Autumn

Autumn will kindle a stronger flame in your love with its beautiful caramel leaves, festive plump pumpkins all around, and Thanksgiving – a time of thankfulness with family and friends. This is the perfect time to prepare gifts and favors for your guests to show your appreciation of having them in your lives (gift inspiration will follow at the end of this post)! Enjoy the rest of the season, take lots of pictures together, and look forward to the next chapter of your lives!

Winter Wonderland Wedding

Winter is the only time of the year when pictures look truly magical, from romantic sunset photos in the daytime, to night pictures surrounded by dazzling lights (and if you’re lucky, snow!). Winter weddings are often unforgettable. The indoor venue will radiate warmth and coziness on the chilliest of winter days, making your wedding have a more intimate feeling of togetherness.

Brielle Easton, our beautiful #NassauBride, shares her magical winter wedding experience here:

“We chose a winter wedding in Princeton because we were looking for a classic, timeless and utterly romantic atmosphere that could be captured forever in our photos. The bright holiday lights in Palmer Square and the rich history of the town both played a role in our decision to choose the Nassau Inn for our wedding. We wanted a wedding that was picturesque, with hopefully a chance of snow, and ended up having such a magical and beautiful day.”

Princeton is where Susan and Scott share many precious memories. When summer came around, they decided to make their dream of saying “I do” a reality.

“My husband Scott and I met while attending college at Rutgers University,” Susan says. “We grew up in the Princeton area and have always loved the town.  We chose the Nassau Inn because it had sentimental memories for both of us.”

Nassau Inn Invites Couples to Fall in Love with Princeton!

On March 19th, the Nassau Inn and the Princeton community bring to town a wedding showcase event unlike any other where guests can truly experience everything for themselves and see why Princeton is THE WEDDING DESTINATION!

A PRINCETON WEDDING SHOWCASE, MARCH 19th, 12-4pm at Nassau Inn, open house style.

Couples who picture a magical winter wedding, cocktail hour by lantern light, a light and breezy outdoor ceremony or a dramatic ballroom event, will be inspired by tangible exhibits and planning tips on bringing those visions to life. This year’s second annual event will tap into the creative minds of design and floral experts such as Petal Pushers, Viburnum Designs & Brillman’s Rental Barn and bring guests fully designed rooms they can walk through, feel and picture themselves in.

Pre-registered guests will have the opportunity to work with one of Nassau Inn’s preferred photographers Kyo Morishima and have their engagement photo taken in an iconic setting. Digital copies will be provided to the guests for their personal use.

The timeless debate of live music, DJ or both will be easy to answer after guests experience performances by Franklin and Alison Orchestra, Sound Choice DJ and Ambient DJ. Dancing shoes are a must because the Inn’s preferred musicians will keep the party going all day! Couples looking to add a little flair to their event should be sure to catch Don’s Piano who will be playing cocktail music in the timeless second floor lobby and Princeton’s very own Tiger Lilies acapella group will make a special appearance and perform a few of their hits!

Brides fall in love with gorgeous gowns from The Bridal Suite and Boutique of Hamilton. The live model fashion show format will allow fluid conversation with the models. Those important questions such as fit and comfort level will all be answered! Once they know what they want to wear for the big day, a trip to see the beauty consultants from Cosmo Bleu Salon will get brides a mini makeover and up-do trial.

Grooms will not be forgotten at the wedding show. New this year, Brooks Brothers will join in the live model fashion show. From Tuxedos to custom tailored suits, you’re sure to find the right style and budget for your groom and groomsmen. The show is the perfect opportunity to cross off everything on “his” to do list in one day. A1 Limousine will be here with demo vehicles and Nassau Inn staff is on hand to answer all of his rehearsal dinner questions.

Of course no showcase would be complete without menu sampling. This year guests should come hungry and ready to sample two different style menus. Guest can taste the classic braised beef short rib entree or sample selections from our new reception style menu “Midnight in Paris.” In addition to wedding entrees, try popular enhancements such as post wedding breakfasts, cocktail hour stations and “Say Good Night Gracie’s”. Couples may want to add a touch of local flair to complement their wedding packages. Tastings from Nassau Inn’s local partners will also be available. Visit Olsson’s Fine Foods, Chez Alice, Cartero & Cavero, Thomas Sweets’ and the Caketeria at the showcase.

Top 5 Cheese and
Wine/Liquor Pairings

“Cheese is fulfilling to eat and full of flavor. It’s never boring,” says Rudie Smit, who owns Olsson’s Fine Foods with his wife, Jennifer. “All cheeses are different and the ongoing discovery process is truly fascinating. Learning about cheese is like uncovering a book full of stories – there’s a story behind the person who made the cheese, how they first made it and how the flavors developed over time,” he says. Hear all about these stories AND enjoy his gourmet cheese at the Princeton Wedding Showcase in March! In the meantime, learn the top 5 ways to pair cheese with wine/liquor with Rudie’s pro tips!

  1. Creamier cheeses love the subtle flavor of sparkling white wine. Délice de Bourgogne, a French triple cream cheese, goes well with champagne. This is Rudie’s favorite pairing.
  2. Red wine goes with harder cheeses such as Gouda, Manchego and Goat Milk Cheese. Carménère wine from Chile is fruity, not bitter nor tart, which pairs best with earthy and nutty cheeses.
  3. Malt Whiskey goes with 5 Year Aged Gouda. Rudie and his folks call it “Candy Cheese” because of its sweetness, butterscotch-caramel flavor and crunchy texture.
  4. Cheese with beer is a classic pairing that goes way back in Europe and has many variations… Here are a few!Rudie’s tips on pairing cheese with beer:
    • Stouts and porters go with smoked cheese.
    • Lagers go better with younger cheeses such as cheddar.
    • Crisp beer, just like white wine, goes with creamier cheeses.
  5. Delice de Jura is a pasteurized milk cheese. When melted, you can serve it on a spoon or spread it on crusty bread. This cheese pairs best with fruity red or white wine and is a great choice for weddings and parties, especially in the spring.

If this made you hungry, then it’s time to head over to Olsson’s Fine Foods and satisfy your cheese cravings! This gourmet cheese shop is only a walk away from our doorsteps, and we’re partnered together in various ways. Olsson’s specialty imported cheeses are available on our corporate, social and wedding menu packages. Cheese and entertaining also go hand-in-hand. If you’re newly engaged, don’t miss out on a chance to taste Olsson’s Gourmet Cheese at our Princeton Wedding Showcase on Sunday, March 19th! Pre-register for the event here. See you there!

Tips for Great Engagement
Photos by Kyo Morishima Photography

Kyo and Janna are a husband-and-wife team who run Kyo Morishima Photography, a relaxed, documentary-style wedding photography studio based in central New Jersey. They were sponsors of our 2nd annual Princeton Wedding Showcase and one of our favorite photographers to work with! Here are their tips for great engagement photos.

  • Visit your happy place!
Think of a place to go or an activity to do together that you makes you smile and feel happy. For instance, if you love being with your dog, go for a walk with your dog! Or if you love coffee, go to one of your favorite cafes. Or if you love playing games together, have a Jenga match!
  • Dress to make yourself happy
Don’t worry too much about what type of clothes to wear. There are a few simple guidelines you should keep in mind: mid-tone, plain colors or very simple patterns look best; very dark or light colors or bold, big patterns can be challenging in photographs. But other than that, the important thing is to wear clothes that make YOU feel like you look great and are comfortable!
  • Cloudy, snowy, or misty weather can be just as beautiful as clear skies
Don’t worry too much about the weather or the time of year. It’s possible to take great photos in most types of weather and at any time of year. But do check with your photographer about his or her policy regarding rescheduling the photo shoot if the weather is TOTALLY uncooperative (like, if it’s raining cats and dogs).
  • Schedule your photo session when the light is prettiest
The best light for photos is very early in the day when the sun is rising, or late in the afternoon when the sun is setting. We often schedule engagement sessions to begin about two hours before sunset time.
  • Expect that it’ll take a bit of time to relax
In the beginning of the photo shoot, you’ll probably feel a little stiff and weird. After all, you’re probably not used to being followed around by a photographer (unless you’re a professional model). That’s completely natural. Go with the flow and keep focusing on each other. Treat the photo session like a fun date.
  • Find a photographer with whom you connect
It’s definitely important that you feel a rapport with your photographer. That’s one of the things you should pay attention to when you first meet each other. Do you have a good feeling about him or her? Can you have a conversation? Do you *like* him or her? If you connect with each other, that will have a big impact on how the pictures turn out. When you get along with your photographer, it will make it so much easier to relax in front of the camera.
